Adopt a highway in Lake County

The Lake County Division of Transportation is accepting applications for the Adopt-A-Highway Program.

Enrollment is open through Aug. 31.

This program provides residents and businesses an opportunity to contribute toward a cleaner, greener environment one mile at a time.

For nearly 20 years, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers have removed litter from Lake County highways and bike paths.

Year after year, this program continues to be a success thanks to the dedication of hard-working volunteers from various business, civic, not-for-profit, social and youth groups.

During this year’s spring enrollment period, the program hit an all-time high with 93 percent of available sections adopted.

When your group or business adopts a highway, the Division of Transportation provides high-visibility safety vests, trash bags and safety information. The group is responsible for litter removal twice a year from both sides of the adopted county highway.

This experience promotes teamwork, helps the environment, and provides a valuable public service. Groups receive recognition through commemorative signs at their adopted locations.

Participants must be at least 10 years old. Anyone younger than 18 must have adult supervision.
