The North American Sunfish Championship Regatta is under way
The Lake Bluff Yacht Club is holding the 50th North American Sunfish Championship Regatta through Saturday, Aug. 4, on Lake Michigan, east of the Waukegan public beach.
All sailors in the regatta will use Sunfish sailboats, identical 14-foot long, single-handed sailboats that have been produced for more than 50 years. Many of today’s Olympic sailors have sailed Sunfish during their careers.
Men and women compete equally and there are prizes in various age categories, as well overall prizes.
The event kicked off July 31 with two days of youth competition for sailors younger than 19, which is followed by three days of open racing for sailors of all ages starting Tuesday, Aug. 2.
It is expected that approximately 75 sailors will compete in this year’s regatta. Current entrants include sailors from 19 states, including Florida, Delaware, Louisiana, New York, Texas and throughout the Midwest, as well as from Bermuda and Thailand.
The public is welcome to observe the racing and meet the sailors at the beach before and after racing.
The Lake Bluff Yacht Club is a community-based, family-friendly, sailing, kayaking and social club based in Lake Bluff. More than 110 families from Lake Bluff and surrounding communities belong to the club, which hosts weekly summer and fall sailing races, as well as a number of family-oriented social events each year. New members are welcome.
