Buffalo Grove students win essay contest awards
A few months ago, Weinstein Funeral Home announced its 2012 Scholarship Essay Contest program for all students currently enrolled in Hebrew School programs. The scholarship program was a chance for the students to earn up to $1,000 toward their religious school education (first place-$1,000; second place-$500; third place-$250).
Students were asked to write one essay, 250 words or less, about this year’s subject, which is taken from the Ten Commandments: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”
The children had to write what this commandment meant to them.
Competition was divided into two groups: Group 1, ages 8-10; and group 2, ages 11-13. Three scholarships were awarded in each group.
Congregation Beth Judea students Camey Zussman, Maya Shub and Courtney Shub, all of Buffalo Grove, submitted essays to the Weinstein Essay Contest. Camey won third place ($250) in the 11- to 13-year-old age group; Courtney won second place ($500) in the 11-to 13-year-old-age group; and Maya won second place ($500) in the 8-to 10-year-old age group.
Beth Judea is a Conservative/Masorti synagogue located on Route 83 and Hilltop Road, in Long Grove. Its education director is Anna Besser. Gary Ernsteen is vice president of education.
