Help the Lords Park zookeeper feed animals

Sign up for an up close and personal look at the bison, deer and elk at the Lords Park Zoo on Saturday, July 28. Meet at the Elgin Public Museum for a short introduction after which they will head to the zoo to assist the Lords Park zookeeper in feeding these animals.

The Bison Feeding will begin at 7 a.m. at the museum building, located in Elgin’s Lords Park at 225 Grand Blvd. Cost is $2 for adults, $1 for children, and free for museum members.

Elgin Alive: The Elgin Public Museum is hosting an Elgin Alive series event for Elgin Community Network from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at the museum, 225 Grand Blvd. in Lords Park on Elgin’s east side.

Come to the Elgin Public Museum after hours to dive into sustainable gardening. Tour the beautiful 1907 museum building and learn about the exhibits and stories behind them.

The featured exhibit is “Green Scale: Weighing in on the Green Movement” that examines the successes, shortcomings and impact of the green movement on the global village. Check out the new hydroponic garden; plant your own herb seed in the hydroponic garden that you can come back to visit. Then they will tour the savanna, medicinal and Three Sisters Gardens outside the museum.

This exhibition was created by students of the Graduate Museum Studies Program at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. The sponsor for the exhibition is the Elgin Climate Change Organization.

“Ramadan’s Lanterns”: On Saturday, July 28, the Elgin Public Museum, 225 Grand Blvd., offers “Ramadan’s Lanterns” from noon to 1 p.m.

Ramadan begins on July 20 in 2012 and is a month of fasting and celebration for Muslim people around the world.

In Egypt, the cultural tradition is light up the night with beautiful lanterns during the month of Ramadan.

Learn a little about the tradition and try your hand at creating your own paper lantern at this free program.

PAWS: The Elgin Public Museum, 225 Grand Blvd., offers its “PAWS” preschool program. Help stimulate a child’s natural curiosity of the diverse world around them through stories, games, crafts, songs and museum objects.

Children 3-5 years old and their caregivers are invited to these education programs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. The fee is $10 per children or $8 for museum members.

This year’s theme, “In Our Own Backyard,” continues on Aug. 18 with “Outrageous Owls,” on Sept. 15 with “Awesome Apples,” on Oct. 20 with “Terrific Trees,” on Nov. 17 on “Fashionable Fish,” and on Dec. 15 with “Cool Cultures.”
