Police questioning person of interest in fatal Lombard fire

Authorities were questioning a person of interest Monday after a Lombard fire that killed a 24-year-old woman, while her 6-year-old son escaped. Paula Morgan, 24, died after the fire tore through the home she shared with her mother and child at about 4 a.m. Sunday. No charges had been filed as of last night. Mundelein rejects backyard chicken proposal

Beehives and chicken coops will not be making their way into backyards in Mundelein just yet. Village officials voted down the proposal 4-2 last night, during a meeting where residents complained about the potential nuisances such as odor or noise coming from the chickens. Some residents voiced concern chickens could reduce their property value and attack predators. Full story.

FBI: Man told Waukegan teller, ‘I will pop you’

A Zion man facing a bank robbery charge told a Waukegan teller inside a Jewel-Osco that he would “pop” them before fleeing with more than $4,500, according to a federal complaint. Larry D. Williams, 51, displayed what looked like a handgun wrapped in a plastic bag when he threatened the teller, police said. He was arrested Friday after an acquaintance saw his photo in the news and contacted the FBI. Full story.

DeVry to cut 570 jobs

Downers Grove-based DeVry Inc. plans to cut about 570 jobs because it expects fourth-quarter earnings to be lower than expected. The for-profit educational firm said the cuts will primarily be on the West Coast but could include other institutions elsewhere. The shortfall in revenue is from the increased use of scholarships awarded to May and July classes and higher-than-expected operating costs, according to the company. Full story.

Wheeling OKs concept plans for Town Center

The Wheeling village board has approved a $120 million concept plan for the Town Center, which would revolve around a large theater company. The project would also include large and small retailers, parking, a greenway and high-end rental apartments. The development would be on the former Wickes Furniture site along Dundee Road. Wood Dale man falls from tree, dies

Police say a 43-year-old man was intoxicated when he climbed a tree Saturday night before falling and suffering fatal injuries. John Schlage fell out of the tree near his home and was taken to an area hospital at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. He died a few hours later from the injuries suffered in the fall. An autopsy ruled the death accidental and indicated alcohol played a factor. Full story.

Weather

Heavy storms in the north and west suburbs are moving in and will be here in the morning hours. The strong line of storms are capable of bringing 70 mph winds and heavy rain before it blows through. After the rain moves on, high temperatures will reach about 86 degrees today, but it will be about 79 as you work your way out the door this morning. Temperatures will dip to 73 degrees overnight. Traffic

Numerous delays and snarls are being reported due to the heavy line of storms that blew through this morning. Flashing traffic lights are causing delays in Addison, Itasca, West Chicago, St. Charles, Vernon Hills, and Lake Barrington, while a fallen tree is causing delays on Dundee Road at Healy Road. Construction delays has forced Rollins Road over the railroad tracks at Route 83 in Round Lake Beach to remain shut down until Thursday, authorities said. Full story.

Sox bats come out Monday

Home runs from three Sox starters pushed the south siders to a 7-4 win over the Minnesota Twins last night. Paul Konerko hit the big blast, a three-run homer in the first inning that helped end the Sox three-game losing streak. Full story.

Cubs down Pirates 2-0

Jeff Samardzija gave up one hit over eight innings and Alfonso Soriano hit two run-scoring doubles as the Chicago Cubs cooled off the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 on Monday night. Full story.

Dempster headed to Atlanta?

A number of news outlets, including the Atlanta Braves’ own website, reported that Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster was on his way to Atlanta yesterday, but by the end of the day nothing was official and Dempster remained a Cub. One name mentioned in the trade talk was pitcher Randall Delgado, but the Cubs termed the reports “speculation.” Dempster tweeted, “There is no trade.” Full story.
