Advance this clean energy project

As an elected official, it is my job to consider what’s best for the entire state when determining the future of Illinois. One project is a win-win from upstate to downstate.

The Chicago Clean Energy is a $3 billion private investment in the state — the likes of which has never been seen. It will generate more than $10 billion in public revenues, create thousands of jobs in northeastern and southern Illinois and demonstrate leadership in clean energy technology.

Like Gov. Pat Quinn, who has an unrivaled record when it comes to protecting consumers, the Illinois General Assembly takes care to protect Illinois residents and consumers. We believe this project could be a feather in the governor’s cap, which is why we passed six pieces of legislation supporting it.

Consumers statewide will be offered something no utility has ever offered them: a predictable price in one of the nation’s most volatile markets. They will also benefit from a guarantee of $100 million in total savings and a 2 percent rate cap to protect against market price swings — both required by the legislation we supported.

I believe this project is truly visionary. I look forward to Gov. Quinn bringing it to Illinois, making our state a leader in clean energy jobs, consumer protections and reinvestment.

Misleading information and scare tactics surrounding this project do a disservice to our constituents and damage our state’s reputation with companies that want to invest in Illinois. I am confident the governor will not bow to these scare tactics. He knows it will make it difficult to embrace alternative energy projects in the future. That’s not what Illinois needs.

I look forward to Gov. Quinn signing this bill and moving Illinois forward.
