Dining events: Real Urban Barbecue opens with eating challenge

Here's the RUB in Vernon Hills: a new restaurant — Real Urban Barbecue. Grand opening festivities take place this weekend with an eating challenge for high schoolers on Sunday: The Hungry Home-wrecker throwback sandwich — 1½ pounds andouille sausage, 2 pounds pulled pork, hot sauce, a pint of coleslaw and 6 ounces of RUB's brain buster pickles. Winners get a free sandwich daily for a year.

Glazed and Infused at Francesca's Tavola
Francesca's Tavola now offers Glazed and Infused's reinvented doughnuts every Saturday and Sunday. With locations already in the city, the new morning concept delivers handcrafted artisan doughnuts to the 'burbs. Flavors include Luscious Lemon — made with lemon cake, filled with yuzu curd and topped with a lemon glaze and candied zest — as well as creme brulee, red velvet, raspberry glazed, PB&J and maple bacon long johns. Pre-orders have a one dozen minimum and must be placed by Friday.

Honoring veterans
The Village Tavern in historic Long Grove invites everyone to pay tribute to current and veteran military personnel at its annual pig roast from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 29. The pig will be donated and prepared by staff at Dorfler's Meat Market in Buffalo Grove. Lunch costs $10 for civilians; current and retired personnel will be treated to the meal. Live music and children's activities are on tap all day.
