Aurora man busted 30 minutes after bank robbery
An Aurora man was captured less than 30 minutes after robbing an Aurora bank thanks to a GPS tracking device that was placed inside the stolen money, authorities said.
Miguel A. Ramirez, 29, of the 1100 block of Comet Drive, \ was charged in a federal criminal complaint with one count of bank robbery, FBI spokeswoman Joan Hyde said
Hyde said Ramirez entered a PNC Bank in the 0 to 100 block of South Broadway in Aurora about 9:15 a.m. Saturday and handed the teller a withdrawal slip that said “all the money,” while also pulling out what was later determined to be a BB gun, Hyde said.
The teller couldn’t read the note, Hyde said, so Ramirez whispered, “Give me all the money.” The teller obliged and handed over $7,026 in a gray plastic bag he had brought with him, Hyde said. Ramirez then placed the note into the bag, the gun back in his waistband, and fled the store, Hyde said.
But the GPS device was included in the money he was given, Hyde said, and the man was captured at 9:35 a.m. at a gas station in the 6500 block of Route 34 in Oswego.
He was detained by authorities after leaving the store, and Hyde said police found the money, gun, note and clothing he had been wearing during the heist in the vehicle he was driving.
Ramirez is being held in the Metropolitan Correction Center, Hyde said, and is scheduled to appear in court again Wednesday.
