Cougars fall 6-3 to Whitecaps

Four innings of hitless relief helped the West Michigan Whitecaps hang on to a 6-3 victory as they defeated the Kane County Cougars on Sunday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

West Michigan grabbed the lead with 3 runs in the top of the second off starter Kyle Smith (0-1).

Aaron Westlake started the rally with a single and scored on a Jason Krizan double. Krizan scored on a two-out single by Edgar Corcino, and Chad Wrighty then added an RBI single.

Zach Maggard pushed the Whitecaps’ lead to 5-1 with a 2-run homer to right-center against Smith in the fourth inning.

Kane County (47-46, 13-10) did lead initially as Michael Antonio drove home Danny Mateo with a single in the first. Alex Llanos singled with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to pull the Cougars within 3. Danny Mateo ripped a solo home run to right in the fifth.

Nick Avila, Michael Torrealba and Dan Bennett (11th save) shut down the Cougars from there. Jonathan Dooley and Rudy Brown combined for 3 scoreless innings out of the Cougars’ bullpen before Andrew Triggs gave up a run in the ninth.
