Mundelein police chief wants bar's liquor license revoked

Mundelein liquor officials will decide in August whether to give the Blue 60 Sports Tavern and Grill a death sentence due to excessive liquor violations, police officials said Wednesday.

Police Chief Ray Rose said he is asking that the commission revoke Blue 60's liquor license after the sports bar on the 300 block of Townline Road as hit with 12 liquor violations following a July 4 brawl.

Those violations follow two others the club faces from an altercation last year and earlier this year, Rose said.

Owners of the establishment will meet with the liquor commission on Aug. 13, Rose said.

A manager from Blue 60 refused to comment about the issue when contacted Wednesday.

“Because of their excessive complaints, they are draining village resources by having us there routinely to stop problems,” Rose said. “They haven't done anything to get better when they were previously suspended, so the time has come to revoke the license. But, of course, that decision is up to the liquor commission.”

Blue 60 was allowed to again dispense alcohol Wednesday after its liquor license was suspended for one week following the early morning July 4 brawl that resulted in one man being hospitalized.

Rose said officers were called to the bar at approximately 1:40 a.m. after receiving reports of a large fight inside. Upon arrival, he said, police found one man who was seriously injured and had to be taken by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Rose said police issued 12 violations, which included serving alcohol to minors, overserving intoxicated patrons, exceeding building capacity and blocking building exits.

At one point, Rose said, there were more than 350 people in the bar, but management had chained an emergency exit closed to keep people from sneaking in or getting out.

“They left one exit unlocked in the building, but that was it,” he said. “Had something major happened there, it could have been really bad.”

If the liquor commission revokes the tavern's license, it would be the first time in village history, Rose said.

By law, if a liquor license is revoked, the address of the building would be blocked from dispensing alcohol for one year, he added.

“They have 14 violations in front of the liquor commission, so we are at the point where we need to deal with this problem,” he said.
