Circus duo opens Batavia's touring season Friday

Circo Comedia, the first show of the Batavia Fine Arts Centre touring series, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 6. Tickets are now on sale.

Circo Comedia has unpredictable thrills, comedy and daredevil stunts are the signature style of this fantastic duo from Montreal. Circo Comedia was conceived in the autumn of 1998 to perform a distinctive style of humor, acrobatic tricks, daring feats, magic and eccentricity. Following in the tradition of the Quebec Circus, Jean Saucier, a master equilibrist, juggler, trick cyclist, acrobat and magician, performs his feats from dizzying heights while Patrick Cote, a burlesque clown, expert roller skater and drummer, innocently tries his best to be the imperfect assistant.

Seven performance acts from around the United States and Canada will be arriving at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre in the 2012-2013 season. There also will be a special program for kids.

The season will continue on Sept. 8 with “FDR” starring Ed Asner. Asner, recipient of seven Emmy Awards (“Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Lou Grant”) and 16 nominations, five Golden Globe Awards, and member of the TV Academy Hall of Fame, will star in the solo performance drama, “FDR” based upon Dore Schary's Broadway hit “Sunrise at Campobello,” which ran 70 weeks on Broadway. “FDR” explores the life of one of America's best-loved presidents and the events and decisions that shaped a nation. This powerful play follows the iconic president as he reflects on his years in office, from inauguration to the trials of World War II.

Backed by a soaring orchestral score, a cast of award-winning dancers and singers travels seamlessly over decades of styles from Broadway and big band to world music and pop/rock in “Tap” on Oct. 13. Batavia native Nicholas Brooks will perform Oct. 20. Brooks has been performing in Las Vegas and around the world for the better part of a decade. Charles Dickens' timeless tale of redemption and eternal hope, “A Christmas Carol,” comes to tuneful life in this one-actor musical, “Humbug,” on Dec. 8. The International Tenors will perform Feb. 2, 2013. Enjoy the melodious sounds of the International Tenors as they perform opera, musical theater, operetta and pop. Martha's clever way with words saves the day in this doggone funny new musical based on the “Martha Speaks” series of books by Susan Meddaugh. It will be performed March 2, 2013. Take a stroll down memory lane with “Masters of Motown” June 22, 2013. They perform music from the Temptations, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Four Tops, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, Commodores and many more.

Season tickets are now on sale at www.BataviaFineArtsCentre.org and may be purchased in three-, four- or seven-show increments and start at $57, plus ticket fees.
