Village of Lombard Staff Working Aftermath of Summer Storm
At approximately 12:30 p.m. a storm with winds estimated at 80 miles per hour that has affected some 200 properties swept through the Village. Lombard has declared the Village a disaster zone and will be working with DuPage County in assessing the damages. No injuries have been reported.
“Our staff in the Police, Fire and Public Works Departments have been called in to assess the damage and begin the clean up effort,” stated David Hulseberg, Lombard Village Manager. “We are also being assisted by the Citizens Police Academy Alumni who have been trained to watch down wires until ComEd can arrive on the scene,” he added. The Village's Crisis Management Team (CMT) has been activated as well.
The Village has partnered with Yorktown Center to establish the mall as an official cooling center, during normal business hours.
“We activated the CMT due to the extensive storm and wind damage,” said Village President William Mueller. “We have also activated the Village Board's Storm Debris Management Policy.” The policy allows for property owners to place brush, limbs and other personal storm debris at the curb for pick-up by Village staff throughout
the week. Materials must be at the curb by noon on Tuesday, July 3.
“At a time like this, we encourage neighbors to clean up each other's yard and work together as a community,” Mueller added.
“Storm calls normally sent to our central dispatch center are being forwarded to our Emergency Operating Center,” said Jeff Holst, Interim Fire Chief. “We are dispatching the calls locally, some 60 thus far, to free up the central dispatch for emergencies,” Holst said. These calls are in addition to the normal fire and emergency medical calls that we receive, Holst added.
The Lombard Police Department is assisting with clearing some of the lighter debris from blocked roadways. They are also responding to alarm calls and have called in shift personnel early to assist with the increased number of storm-related calls, according to Lombard Deputy Chief Pat Rollins.
