Elgin fire causes $70,000 in damages
An Elgin house fire caused an estimated $70,000 in damages Saturday morning.
Firefighters were alerted around 5:40 a.m. of smoke coming from the house, located at 501 Douglas Ave.
“Fortunately the neighbors saw it and called us and we got there pretty quick,” said Elgin Battalion Chief Bryan McMahan, adding that the residents were not home when the fire began.
McMahan said the fire started on the first floor of the house in the kitchen, and was contained to that room. The fire was under control about seven minutes after firefighters arrived, but caused about $50,000 in property damage and another $20,000 in damages to household contents.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
