Wheeling police crackdown for holiday drivers
From Friday, June 22, through Tuesday, June 26, the Wheeling Police Department conducted additional seat belt and DUI enforcement with extra patrol details paid for through a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The intensified enforcement effort focused on late-night hours.
Through June 26, the Wheeling police had logged 40 additional hours of patrol, 82 traffic stops and 31 seat belt citations. There were also eight speeding citations, two child safety seat citations and one misdemeanor DUI arrest.
The crackdown is part of the statewide effort. The Fourth of July is one of the deadliest holidays due to an increase in drunk-driving fatalities. Wheeling Police will be out in full force this Fourth of July showing zero tolerance for drunk drivers.
