Village of Lombard to receive environmental award

LOMBARD, Illinois— The National Sustainability Association has selected the Village of Lombard for recognition in their National Environmental Hall of Fame. The award will be presented at the Taste of Lombard's family stage in Madison Meadow Park on July 5 at 7:30 p.m.

The Association cited the Village's Sustainability Framework and, most notably, the Village's Board of Trustees decision to enter into a community-wide contract for 100% carbon free electricity as reasons for the recognition. Nearly half of the energy (47%) used in Lombard is electric.

As a result of the contract, the Village of Lombard has fulfilled its pledge to the U.S. Mayors Conference to reduce greenhouse gasses at least seven percent below the community's 1990 levels. It is anticipated that the actual reduction in greenhouse gasses attributed to Lombard will now be about 25% below 1990 levels.

The Chair of Lombard's Environmental Concerns Committee, Trustee Laura Fitzpatrick, announced that “the Village of Lombard has made significant strides in its goals to advocate for the environment and a sustainable lifestyle. We are very proud of the current and former Committee members that have instilled good practices and policies. This green energy initiative is a testament to this commitment.”

Copies of the Sustainability Framework are available from the Department of Public Works at (630) 620-5740 or at www.villageoflombard.org. Information about the Environmental Hall of Fame is available at http://environmentalhalloffame.net.
