Beating suspects held in Elgin

A judge set bail at $500,000 Sunday for two men accused of forcing their way into an Elgin home early Saturday and severely beating a man and a woman in the presence of a 5-year-old child. Elgin police arrested Modesto Rosales, 24, and Jaime Zarate, 27, on charges of home invasion and aggravated battery after a brief foot chase outside Rosales’ home on the 300 block of Wilcox. Museum marks 25 years

The DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville celebrated a very grown-up anniversary Sunday with a daylong indoor-outdoor party. Roughly 300,000 people from all over the country visit the colorful building on Washington Street each year. Full story.

Talent turns out for hoops tournament

The second annual Sean Toedman Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in East Dundee served as a makeshift reunion for some of the area’s top talent over the past two decades. The Sunday afternoon event held in Lions Park featured 26 teams, with money raised from the tourney headed to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. Full story.

Crime Stoppers gets results in suburbs

The reward-based program that relies on anonymous tipsters might lack the pizazz of TV’s “Most Wanted,” but consider this: Since the Illinois chapter formed in 1983, tipsters have provided enough information to solve 73,988 cases. “Look at the stats. ‘America’s Most Wanted’ has its own program and has had a national recognition for many years,” said William Nation, president of the state chapter. “We will solve 10 to 20 times the crimes they do, and no one knows about it. Harper to add manufacturing program

To catch up with what many are calling a manufacturing renaissance — economic activity in the sector expanded in May for the 34th consecutive month, according to the Institute for Supply Management — Harper College is partnering with more than 70 manufacturers in its district. The Palatine community college this fall will launch an Advanced Manufacturing program allowing students to, in as few as 18 months, earn specialized certifications, complete a paid internship and prepare for either a career or four-year institution. Des Plaines River Trail still has a gap

A gap of 1,500 feet is all that stands in the way of the Des Plaines River Trail’s long-awaited completion. Stretching 33 miles from Wadsworth to Wheeling, the trail connect 12 forest preserves and protects more than 7,600 acres of riverside land. But it’s not complete — and the man who owns the land needed to finish the project isn’t ready to sell just yet. Full story.

It’s going to be a cooler start to the workweek following a hot weekend. Temperatures in the early morning hours hovered around the mid-60s, and are only expected to reach the mid-70s today, under mostly sunny skies. Tonight’s temperature is expected to dip to a low of 55 degrees. It gets a little warmer Tuesday, reaching a high of 80 degrees under sunny skies. Traffic

An accident blocking the two left lanes on the outbound Kennedy Expressway near River Road is contributing to significant delays during the morning rush hour. Police and fire crews were reported to be on the scene. Other roads were experiencing periodic delays.

Cubs lose in Arizona

Wade Miley outpitched Matt Garza in eight strong innings, Justin Upton had three RBIs and the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Miley (9-3) retired 20 of the first 21 batters he faced before giving up a homer to Alfonso Soriano in the seventh inning, then worked out of a jam in the eighth with runners on second and third. White Sox’ Quintana ‘dazzling’ vs. Brewers

It is safe to assume Jose Quintana was never in danger of being traded to Boston for Kevin Youkilis. Real safe. With 8 shutout innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field, Quintana continues to pitch himself into untouchable status. “It feels good that the manager and the front office have that faith in me to let me go out there and do what I’m doing,” Quintana said through a translator after the White Sox won 1-0 in 10 innings. “It feels good that I’m able to contribute to the team.” Full story.

Imrem likes deal for Youkilis
