Missing Lombard tortoise found

Lance the intrepid tortoise who went missing from the backyard of his Lombard home a week ago today was located Saturday.

The 44-year-old tortoise was found safe and sound in St. Charles.

Owners Andy and Susan Lechner said someone visiting Lombard last weekend found the tortoise in the alley he was known to escape to.

Thinking Lance to be a wild animal who needed a good home, the man took him to St. Charles.

Lance then spent five days in an empty pool in St. Charles, where he was taken care of by the man's 10-year-old daughter, the Lechners said.

After seeing media coverage about Lance going missing, a neighbor of the girl's father contacted the Lechners and told them Lance was in her neighbor's backyard.

The owners were reunited with the African spurred tortoise Saturday.

Barring no more wild adventures, Lance could live to be as old as 120, the Lechners said.
