Bendtner fined, banned for showing sponsored underwear in match

Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner was fined 100,000 euros ($126,000) and banned for a one match after showing an unofficial sponsor’s name on his underwear while celebrating a goal at soccer’s European Championship.

The player will miss a competitive match, which will include qualifying games for the 2014 World Cup, UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, said today in a statement.

Bendtner broke Law 4 of the soccer regulations regarding uniforms, UEFA said on its website. Bendtner is an Arsenal player, but was on loan at Sunderland last season.

He lifted his shirt and lowered his shorts a bit to show the name of a gambling company on the top of his underwear after scoring his second goal in Denmark’s 3-2 loss to Portugal on June 13. Sponsor advertising is not allowed on player uniforms.

Denmark was eliminated from the tournament last night in a 2-1 loss to Germany.
