McHenry County jury convicts Marengo man of DUI in fatal crash

A McHenry County jury Monday found a 49-year-old Marengo man was drunk when he struck a 77-year-old truck driver in a fatal 2008 crash.

McHenry County State’s Attorney Louis Bianchi released a statement that Daniel Bending was found guilty of causing a death while driving under the influence of alcohol.

He faces between three and 14 years in prison.

On April 18, 2008, truck driver Leonard Anderson of Prairie Garden in Boone County was crossing Route 20 on foot in Marengo when he was hit. Anderson survived the initial crash but died the next month.

A blood test showed Bending’s blood-alcohol concentration was 0.081 nearly 2½ hours after the crash.

The Marengo Police Department and McHenry County sheriff’s office investigated the case.
