A puppet for the 1 percent?

Chris Grecos’ letter to the editor on May 30 gives the impression that U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam supports the elimination of tax loopholes and tax breaks so that everyone pays their fair share. Sounds like the rich will pay more. Nothing could be further from the truth.

He failed to mention that Roskam supports eliminating tax loopholes while at the same time lowering overall tax rates for big corporations and the wealthy. All you have to do is look at the list of his contributors, like Goldman Sachs, who are funding his campaign to see who would really benefit from the proposal he supports.

He has signed a pledge not to raise taxes and supports a balanced-budget amendment. This will leave tax rates at historically low levels that would have created massive deficits under any previous administration in our history.

Balancing the budget will require massive cuts in benefits to the poor, the elderly, the sick, the hungry, and cuts in education funding so that the rich can be the only group that do not have to make any sacrifices during these tough economic times.

Roskam refuses to show us how he would balance the budget and how we and our family would be hurt by it. He also supports the elimination of all inheritance and estate taxes so that the children of rich persons will be the only ones that don’t have to make it their own. Roskam appears to me to be a puppet for the 1 percent.
