Authorities suspect cigarette caused Batavia deck fire

Neighbors helped prevent a small Friday deck fire in Batavia from spreading beyond the siding of a house, the Batavia Fire Department indicated Saturday.

Firefighters were alerted at 4:30 p.m. of a fire on the wooden rear deck of a home in the 1300 block of Hall Court.

Upon arrival, they found neighbors using a garden hose to spray water on the fire in an effort to stop it from spreading.

The fire was under control in 15 minutes, according to a news release from the fire department. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters say the fire may have been caused by a discarded cigarette.

Damage to the deck and siding of the house amounted to about $10,000.
