Round Lake Beach pulls out stops for BeachFest 2012
BeachFest has become a centerpiece of summer activity in Round Lake Beach. But this year there will be some added pop, as the village for the first time puts on a fireworks show.
An appearance by Pete Rivera, the original lead singer of Rare Earth, also is intended to up the ante at an already packed schedule.
In observance of the village’s continuing 75th anniversary celebration, BeachFest 2012 has been extended from two days to three.
The annual event runs from Friday to Sunday on the grounds of the Cultural and Civic Center of Round Lake Beach, off Hook Drive and west of Route 83.
“This is an extra special year for us,” said village Trustee Sue Butler, who chairs the organizing committee. “This is a highlight of the 75th (anniversary celebration).”
“We Just Want to Celebrate” is the theme, a nod to one of Rare Earth’s big hits.
“We thought he would be a good fit,” Butler said.
Rivera takes the stage Saturday night just after the fireworks, the first time the village has included that feature at BeachFest.
“Our whole village just loves fireworks,” Butler said.
Besides the traditional pig roast, family games, activities and entertainment, there are a few other new amusements.
On Friday night, there will be a cardboard car contest before the showing of “Cars 2.”
Both are new features and follow the Miss Round Lake Area pageant.
Also new this year is the “Here Comes the All American Lumberjacks Show & Camps!” on Saturday and Sunday.
This free camp gives kids hands-on experience with logrolling and other tricks of the trade.
Butler said the family-friendly festival is a perk for village residents.
“Times are tough,” she said. “You have to do something to keep everybody going.”
