An alternative to the ceremonies

This letter is in regards to the disruptions at graduation ceremonies. As much as school officials try to emphasize the fact that they want a solemn, dignified ceremony in handing out diplomas to children who have worked hard for four years to earn them, there are always those in the audience who think the ceremony is for their child only. They yell, scream, stomp their feet and blow horns, making it difficult for others in the audience to hear their own loved ones’ names. And now some students are being punished by the school’s withholding of their diploma because of excessive cheering!

So, let’s do away with the whole graduation ceremony. Why not have a graduation reception instead? Kids, parents, family come for a one- or two-hour themed reception (somewhat like a prom) where all the graduates’ names and awards are listed; where they can pick up their diplomas, take pictures with decorations in the background, mingle with friends and school officials, give their speeches and have light refreshments.

It can be dressy or casual — but no short shorts or tank tops. Or the grads can still wear a cap and gown. At the end of the reception, all the graduates gather together and everyone yells, applauds, gives a big cheer, whatever! Then it’s over. No sitting through hours of name calling, hoping you’ll be able to hear your child’s name over all the yelling. Just a thought.
