Cougars win in Quad Cities

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Jorge Bonifacio and Lane Adams drilled home runs to pace the Kane County Cougars (34-31) to a 7-5 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits (31-34) Tuesday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

Bonifacio’s blast came as part of a three-run fifth inning which helped break a 1-1 tie. Danny Mateo’s two-out double down the first base line put the Cougars in front as Yowill Espinal and Mateo scored off the smack to right-center off Sam Gaviglio (3-5).

Gaviglio was still out there in the eighth inning with the River Bandits still trailing by 3 runs when he then surrendered a long homer to left from Lane Adams, his fifth of the season.

The Cougars picked up two more runs in the eighth on a throwing error by shortstop Matt Williams to put Quad Cities in a 7-1 hole.

Rudy Brown and Malcom Culver (S, 2) each gave up 2 runs in the final two innings, but the Cougars prevailed to back up Kellen Moen (3-2), who worked 6 innings while limiting the River Bandits to a run on 3 hits. Moen’s only run allowed came on a balk in the third inning to score Luis Mateo, tying the game at 1-1. Bonifacio had singled home Justin Trapp in the first to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.
