Hoffman Estates man faces carjacking charge
A Cook County judge set bail at $50,000 for an 18-year-old Hoffman Estates man facing a carjacking charge after police say he used a BB gun to steal a car from its driver early Saturday.
Slone D. Wofford, of the 500 block of Harvard Drive, is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, a Class X felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison.
Wofford approached the car in the 1700 block of Sussex Drive at 2 a.m. Saturday, displayed the gun and ordered the driver out of the car while leaving the key in the ignition, police said.
After the victim got out of the vehicle, the offender climbed in the drivers seat and drove off, while the victim called police from a cellphone, said Hoffman Estates police Sgt. Darin Felgenhauer.
Police reports indicate the victim told officers the offender wore a ski mask and no shirt. Officers Officers responding to the scene saw the vehicle with Wofford behind the wheel, pulled it over, and arrested him without incident, police said. Police recovered the mask from inside the car. They later recovered the BB gun used in the carjacking, Felgenhauer said.
Wofford next appears in court for a preliminary hearing on June 12.
