Cousin says terrorist suspect can stay with her

The cousin of a Chicago man charged with plotting to become a suicide bomber overseas says she’s willing to take the terrorist suspect into her suburban home while he awaits his September trial.

She spoke at a Monday hearing where defense attorneys asked a judge to release Shaker Masri from jail.

Standing in an orange jumpsuit at the hearing, Masri turned at one point to smile at his cousin.

Thomas Durkin says his 29-year-old client could be confined to home wearing an electronic-monitoring device. His cousin told the judge Masri could stay where she lives with her mother and two children.

But prosecutor Nicole Kim says Masri remains obsessed with martyrdom and that his cousin couldn’t stop him from committing a terrorist attack.

A ruling’s expected this week.
