11-year-old killed in fall from SUV in Oswego

An 11-year-old boy from Montgomery died in a fall from a slow-moving SUV in Oswego, authorities said.

William Furukawa was pronounced dead at 8:57 p.m. Sunday at Advocate Lutheran General Park Ridge, authorities said.

Cook County Medical Examiner officials said an autopsy on the boy was scheduled for Monday, but officials say the boy's death appears to be a tragic accident.

It occurred about 2 p.m. Saturday at Rickard Road and Route 34 in Oswego. The boy fell out of an open rear window of a 2003 GMC SUV when he was trying to motion to another child who was walking for help after the vehicle had broken down, according to a statement from Kendall County Sheriff's Deputy Craig French.

William was taken to Copley Hospital in Aurora, then transferred to Lutheran General Hospital, French said, adding that the boy apparently suffered a head injury in the fall.

The SUV, driven by an unidentified woman, was carrying five children. After the breakdown, the driver asked a 12-year-old passenger to walk for some help, French said. After a minute, he said, the woman was able to restart the vehicle, then instructed the children to get back into the car, and slowly started to pull away.

At that time, William unbuckled his seat belt and leaned out of the rear passenger side window to call out for the walking 12-year-old, French said. However, William leaned too far out and fell out of the SUV.

The woman immediately stopped the vehicle and phoned for an ambulance, French said.
