Summer safety an important topic
Today’s Daily Herald editorial “Bike tragedy a summer warning to all” should be read by all. Parents should cut out the editorial and put it on the refrigerator as a constant reminder for their children.
The editorial discusses the recent death of an 11-year-old named Jos who was struck by a pickup truck while not wearing a bicycle helmet. Those of us who care for these patients in the emergency department every day know too well the tragedy described in the editorial.
We know that accidents happen but often times are preventable. Many injuries can be minimized by simple safety precautions. Two important points mentioned: When riding a bicycle, a skateboard (or a motorcycle), wearing a helmet can prevent serious injury in a fall or collision.
One of our trauma nurse’s children recently was struck by a car in front of his house on his bicycle. His bicycle was destroyed and his helmet broke in half when he hit the pavement but he escaped serious injuries. That helmet saved him but more important was his mother’s insistence that he wear the helmet.
The other point made in your editorial that “safety requires that you pay attention and are aware of your surroundings“ is key. We see many injuries related to distracted driving, distracted biking, distracted rollerblading and skateboarding. Rolling on any wheels and ear buds (or texting) never mix.
“Whatever your route, your equipment or your (moving) activity, make sure you are not distracted from thinking safety first.” Again, well said. Heed the warning from this tragedy; parents, don’t miss this teachable moment.
Let’s all have a safe great summer. Safety first and let’s be careful out there.
