Police shoot SE Indiana man after armed standoff

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. — Police shot and arrested a 31-year-old man in a southeastern Indiana town early Friday morning, bringing to an end an overnight standoff that triggered the brief evacuation of nearby homes.

Officers responding to reports of a domestic disturbance found William C. Hoffman Jr. on the porch of his home in Lawrenceburg, about 20 miles west of Cincinnati, around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, state police spokesman Sgt. Noel Houze Jr. said.

Houze said Hoffman was “uncooperative,” and he began shooting at police from inside the house at around 11 p.m. The officers returned fire.

SWAT officers stormed the house about 3 a.m. and arrested Hoffman, Houze said.

Hoffman was being treated at a Cincinnati hospital Friday. Houze said his injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening. No one else was injured.

Houze said Hoffman’s family got out of the house before the police arrived.

Hoffman faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness, and could face additional charges, Houze said.

Authorities evacuated residents in a one-block area surrounding the downtown home during the standoff, Houze said.
