Atkinson Road bridge to close for two weeks for repairs
The Atkinson Road bridge over the Tri-State Tollway in Green Oaks is scheduled to close on Monday for about two weeks for repairs.
A detour from St. Mary’s Road to Buckley Road to Waukegan Road will be posted.
The bridge is closing, starting at 4 a.m., for deck patching and polymer overlaying and curb repair. It is too narrow to accommodate a work zone with equipment while maintaining traffic.
Jan Kemp, assistant press secretary of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, said she does not expect the closure to cause a big inconvenience.
“While a full closure is an inconvenience, the bridge carries a low volume of traffic, so it is not expected to cause major delays for drivers,” Kemp said.
Adelle Infante, spokeswoman for Abbott Laboratories, which is near the intersection, also does not expect any problems.
“Abbott has a number of entrances to its campus,” Ifante said. “We’re confident that employees who use Atkinson Road will find suitable alternate routes during the brief period of maintenance on this road.”
The closure and detour route were coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation, village of Green Oaks, Lake County Department of Transportation, city of North Chicago, Libertyville Fire Department and local school districts.
