Mateo, Cougars top River Bandits 4-1
Danny Mateo starred for the second straight night with 3 hits and 2 RBI in the Kane County Cougars 4-1 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Thursday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.
With the Cougars (32-28) leading 2-1 in the seventh, Mateo provided insurance as he doubled home Dean Espy and Tim Ferguson before getting thrown out at third base trying to stretch it into a triple.
With the extra cushion, Mike Giovenco (second save) breezed through the final two innings.
Giovenco preserved the lead for Robinson Yambati (2-1), who reached a season-high 7 innings while surrendering just a run on 4 hits. It wasn’t until the seventh when Quad Cities finally got on the board as Roberto De La Cruz singled home Anthony Garcia.
Kane County grabbed the lead early against Dail Villanueva (3-4). Mateo singled with one out before being retired on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jorge Bonifacio.
After a Lane Adams single, Bonifacio scored on a single by Michael Antonio. A two-out run also scored in the fourth as Espy picked up a single to drive in Orlando Calixte.
