Westlake Christian takes music cue from Navy Band

Submitted by Westlake Christian Academy

Westlake Christian Academy’s Concert Band recently spent a day making music with Navy Band Great Lakes.

The day began with performances by the Navy’s “Brass Ambassadors” brass quintet and “Fair Winds” woodwind quartet. After enjoying small group clinics led by Navy Band musicians, the Westlake Christian Concert Band and Navy Band Great Lakes combined for a joint rehearsal and performance of “The Light Eternal” by James Swearingen and “Belle of Chicago” by John Philip Sousa. The combined bands were led by MU1 Chief Michael Wells.

Westlake Christian Academy is a co-educational, independent Christian school comprising about 200 preschool through senior high school students, each of whom is provided with a solid, Christ-centered education that disciples them to honor Jesus Christ in thought, word and deed. The school’s mission is to nurture the spiritual, academic and social maturation of Christian young people through a well-rounded education which includes scholastics, athletics, the arts, and community service in a nondenominational, evangelical context.

Founded in Waukegan in 1972, Westlake Christian Academy relocated to its permanent home in Grayslake in 2002. It is recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International, which provides certification for teachers based on their qualifications in their academic area, Biblical studies and the Christian philosophy of education.
