Infant critical after I-290 rollover

An infant is in critical condition following an afternoon rollover crash on the Eisenhower Expressway near Itasca, according to police.

A preliminary investigation shows the child's safety seat might not have been installed properly, and the infant might have been partially ejected from the vehicle, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Douglas Yorke.

The Ford Explorer was traveling in the eastbound lanes of I-290 when the vehicle struck the right wall off the expressway at about 3:39 p.m. at Irving Park Road, according to police.

The baby boy was airlifted to Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago in critical but stable condition, police said.

The baby suffered “extensive serious injuries,” but was stabilized before he was airlifted, according to Yorke.

Two other people in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, police said.

Three lanes of the expressway were shut down until about 5:25 p.m. while police investigated the crash.

No charges were pending as of about 7:30 p.m., but police said the driver could be charged once the investigation is over.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
