Dist. 46 member: Wait to decide superintendent contract

A Grayslake Elementary District 46 board member at a meeting Wednesday night raised questions about when officials would decide whether to extend the superintendent's contract.

Board member Michael Carbone questioned the timing of when to address Superintendent Ellen Correll's deal, which expires on July 1, 2013. He said a determination should not be made before the 2013 school board election.

For her part, Correll said her contract requires a decision on an extension by the end of February 2013. She said her deal would automatically run another year if the board doesn't take any action.

But Carbone said new board members won't take their seats until Correll's contract is addressed next year. He said the new board should make the call.

“I think it's only responsible and respectful for the new board (to decide),” Carbone said.

Last year, District 46 board members voted 4-3 in favor of retaining Correll through the 2012-13 academic year. Her contract originally had been scheduled for a vote last Aug. 10, but a board majority agreed to postpone action so some members could have more time to make a decision.

Hired in January 2005, Correll came to District 46 from Corning Painted Post School District in upstate New York, where she had been an assistant superintendent of instruction.
