Midwest Generation volunteeers build garden in Waukegan’s Bowen Park

Submitted by Armando Tejada

Midwest Generation Waukegan Station employees recently received an award in recognition of their partnership with the Waukegan Park District, for constructing a children’s garden in Waukegan’s Bowen Park.

Employees of Midwest Generation were all hands on deck for this community project last fall. Twenty-nine employees volunteered 380 hours. The new children’s garden, designed by the Waukegan Park District, features a worm box, several wheelchair-accessible raised beds and benches created out of fallen oak trees from Bowen Park.

On the community service day, Midwest Generation’s volunteers transported and installed the garden’s components, mixed soil, filled beds and assembled a garden shed and rain barrel, all in preparation for the children who would be planting and tending the garden.

“Midwest Generation’s commitment to sustainability, nature and care for the environment made them an ideal partner for this project,” said Theodora Anderson, Community Relations Representative for the Waukegan Park District.

As such, Midwest Generation’s outstanding community involvement made it the recipient of award from the Waukegan Park District for Employee Volunteer of the Year.

In addition to the labor and capital investment, Midwest Generation contributed $2,400 to underwrite Children’s Garden programming expenses and provide scholarships, further underscoring Midwest Generation’s continuing support of their communities.
