Police: Elgin woman was shipped 45 pounds of pot

An Elgin woman is being held on $1 million bond after authorities charged her with having 45 pounds of marijuana shipped to her home.

Diana A. Leal, 50, of the 300 block of Orange Street, has been charged with the manufacture/delivery of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis and possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, both felonies.

The most serious charge carries a six- to 30-year prison term if convicted, with no possibility of probation.

Police said arrested Leal at about 5 p.m. Monday after they intercepted the package and then had an undercover officer bring it to her door, where she accepted it.

After she took the package, police executed a search warrant of her home and she was arrested, authorities said.

Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said the drugs have an estimated street value of $102,000.

Leal is due in court on June 21.

In recent months, police have made several large arrests for marijuana trafficking, mainly stemming from traffic stops along Interstates 88 near Aurora and 90 near Elgin.

A 71-year-old California man recently was sentenced to four years in prison after he admitted shipping 82 pounds of marijuana to a South Elgin warehouse in December 2010.
