Community Invited to Tour New Parks and Facility Services Building

Wheeling Park District is hosting an open house on Saturday, June 16th from 11:00am-2:00pm at the new Parks and Facility Services Building located at 245 Egidi Drive in Wheeling. Come see the equipment and meet the people who keep the parks throughout Wheeling looking beautiful. The new 39,000 square-foot facility, with over 33,000 square feet of warehouse space, houses the District's vehicles, mowers, tools, and equipment. The building also features office space, a project shop, and a tool storage area.

Centrally located to the District's operations and adjacent to the Park District's Northside Park property, this new building replaces the existing facility located at 222 S. Wolf Road which is being torn down as part of the Heritage Park Redevelopment Project. The Park District acquired this new facility, in part, with funds provided from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Built in 2006, the facility had been vacant for many years before being acquired by the Park District. Jan Buchs, Executive Director of the Wheeling Park District stated, “We were very excited to be able to find an existing structure that could be renovated to meet the needs of the parks department. This was a great first step in the Heritage Park Redevelopment Project”.

Work is scheduled to begin this month on the next phase of the project. Slated to finish in 2013, the redeveloped Heritage Park will feature a new Athletic Complex with three artificial turf baseball fields and one football/soccer field, a centrally located Concessions Building with restrooms, Bandshell with natural amphitheater seating, Pavilion with lake overlook, more convenient parking, walking paths looping the entire park, new entry plazas, a new playground and basketball and tennis courts.

At 12:00pm, the Park District will also host a ribbon cutting for the newly renovated Northside Park (located behind the Parks and Facility Services Building). For more information, please call the Wheeling Park District at (847)465-3333.
