Artists of all ages can join in 'Decorate a Chair' contest

The Village's Arts Commission is looking for participants who have a creative flair and an interest in having a lot of fun! We are hosting the 6th annual “Decorate a Chair” competition for all ages that will be showcased at the annual Frontier Days Festival on July 8th at Recreation Park. Chairs may be decorated by a group or an individual and participants should bring their decorated chair to Recreation Park on July 8th. The competition will be held within the park near Belmont Avenue and Miner between 11:30 AM and 2:00 PM. For more information contact Derek Mach, Arts Commission Liaison, at 847.368.5232.

The criteria for selecting the winners includes: artistic impression, originality, quality and aesthetic appeal. The winners for each category will receive a prize.

Eligibility: Open to all of any age. An entry could be designed by an individual or by a group.

Specifications: Chairs of any size or material will be accepted. No limit on number of entries and one entry form per chair.

Setup Date and Time:

• Sunday, July 8, 2011 at Recreation Park (Near Belmont Ave. and Miner Street)

• Check-in: 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM

• Judging: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

• Peoples Choice Award voting ends: 2:45 PM

• Award Ceremony: 3:00 PM

• Chairs Viewed by Public 3-3:30 PM

• Chair Removal/Pick Up 3:30 PM

New this Year: Chairs will be on display for public viewing one half hour after judging from 3-3:30 pm. Chairs can be picked up starting at 3:30 pm.

Application Form: Application forms will be available at the park on July 8th. Forms will be completed the day of the event.

Awards: There will be five categories, with two prizes (first and second place) for all categories except the People's Choice Award, for which there will be only one prize. The People's Choice Award lets anyone vote for their favorite chair. The votes for the People's Choice Award will be accepted until 2:45 PM. A jury of fine arts and crafts professionals will select the winners in the other categories. All winners will be announced at 3:00 PM. Awards will consist of Downtown Arlington Heights gift cards. The categories include:

• People's Choice Award

• Adult (18 and over)

• Youth (12-17)

• Child (11 and younger)

• Family and Friends (more than one individual working together)

Deadline of Submission: No later than 2:00 PM on July 8th at Recreation Park.
