Cougars shut out 2-0 by Peoria

Five pitchers combined on a 3-hit shutout as the Peoria Chiefs claimed the rubber game of a three-game series, 2-0 over the Kane County Cougars on Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.

Ben Wells started the game for the Chiefs (26-32) but left with an apparent injury after just 2 innings.

Luis Liria (1-0) took over in the third and kept the shutout rolling as did three others, including Larry Suarez, Sheldon McDonald and Yao-Lin Wang (fifth save).

Kane County (30-28) only managed 3 singles with just one runner reaching third base as Justin Trapp got there in the first inning.

Peoria grabbed the advantage against Brooks Pounders (3-2) in the third as Pin-Chieh Chen singled and advanced to second on an error by Jorge Bonifacio. Chen scored on a single by Zeke DeVoss.

Peoria added a run in the sixth inning with an RBI groundout from Oliver Zapata to score Yasiel Balaguert. Balaguert had reached on a fielder's choice and went to third on a Javier Baez double.

Pounders lasted 6 innings, striking out six. Cody Fassold worked a pair of innings, and Nick Graffeo finished up in the ninth.
