Appreciate those who work holidays

I found it interesting that the Daily Herald online poll regarding “How do you celebrate Memorial Day?” was so limited. The questions were:

Ÿ I attend a ceremony in my hometown.

Ÿ I attend a ceremony somewhere else, with family.

Ÿ I visit the grave of my fallen loved one.

Ÿ We have a barbecue.

Ÿ I don’t plan anything special.

Ÿ I read about fallen soldiers or war, or watch programs, or view pictures.

The Daily Herald did not even include the option to answer that many of us actually work on Memorial Day and other holidays providing goods, emergency services, health care and telephone support to people who are enjoying a long weekend and who still expect those services and options will be available to them 24/7/365.

Fallen soldiers gave their lives so that we can enjoy our freedom. Those of us who work on holidays have given up our time off so that we can be of service to you when you need us for whatever reason.
