Cougars win 6-5 in 10 innings

A 5-5 tie was broken in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday on a two-out flare to right-center by Lane Adams to give the Kane County Cougars a 6-5 victory over the Peoria Chiefs at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.

Sterling Peralta (0-2) retired the first two batters in the bottom of the 10th with ease before surrendering a triple to Danny Mateo.

After Jorge Bonifacio drew a walk, Adams cashed in an opportunity to be the hero as he floated a ball just out of the reach of right fielder Oliver Zapata to score Mateo.

Peoria (25-32) sent the game into extra innings by tying the score at 5-5 in the eighth. Malcom Culver relieved after Kellen Moen after 7 innings and uncorked a game-tying, 2-run blast to Javier Baez.

Culver didn’t allow another run before turning the game over to Matt Ridings (4-2), who worked a perfect top of the 10th.

Justin Trapp put the Cougars (30-27) on top initially as he hit a 2-run shot in the third. RBI doubles by Orlando Calixte and Kenny Swab put the Cougars up by 3 in the fourth. Moen struck out eight hitters in his 7 innings without walking a batter. He gave up 3 runs, including a homer to Zapata in the fifth.
