Chiefs clobber Cougars

A 3-run homer by Cubs prospect Javier Baez was one of many highlights for the Peoria Chiefs, who clobbered the host Kane County Cougars 15-3 on Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.

Baez blasted his first professional homer in the top of the second, highlighting a 5-run inning against starter Jason Mitchell (1-4), who lasted 3 innings for the second straight start. He allowed 8 runs on 8 hits to the Chiefs (25-31).

The Chiefs roared out to a 12-0 lead, and Jose Rosario (4-5) was the beneficiary. He tossed 7 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits with 10 strikeouts.

The Cougars (29-27) finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth when Danny Mateo singled and eventually scored on Lane Adams’ groundout. Michael Antonio picked up an RBI by driving in Runey Davis after he doubled.
