Fishing derby to be held in Hoffman Estates
The Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce-Sears Holdings Corporation Community Fishing Derby will be held June 9, beginning at 9 a.m. at South Ridge Lake, 1450 Freeman Road, in Hoffman Estates. There are no age and residency restrictions to participate.
This annual event attracts hundreds of fishermen, children and families for a day of both recreation and prizes with the top prize being a $1,000 shopping spree at Cabela’s in Hoffman Estates. In addition, every 10 minutes, a door prize will be announced and awarded to one lucky registered fisherman. Registered fishermen may be able to win restaurant gift cards, fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes and lures, sports equipment and other prizes simply by having their registration slip drawn. Door prizes have been donated by area businesses.
South Ridge Lake will be stocked with 100 tagged fish, each tag worth from $10 to $100. A trophy prize of a $1,000 shopping spree at Cabela’s also awaits one lucky fisherman. Each year, tagged fish have been sponsored by local area businesses to promote a healthy way for families to enjoy a day out. However, all fish caught must be returned to the lake, alive. Therefore, barbless hooks are highly recommended.
Along with the Grand Prize fish and free door prizes, the first 500 registered attendees will receive a goody bag of free items and local business coupons. The first 200 children registered receive a fishing themed T-shirt.
This Year, tagged fish will be Blue Gill and Cat Fish. However, any tagged fish from prior years, caught, registered and released will receive a token award, as well.
The Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce has hosted this event annually, and this is the 17th year of the event, which will include food vendors, bait sales, a fishing rigging-help station, prize tent and more. Registration is $5 per person on site or $3 per person before June 6.

Bring your own pole and tackle, but no fishing license is required on this day in Illinois. You may bring coolers of food and nonalcoholic beverages. All coolers will be checked for content.
