Choose window treatments that are functional, attractive

How to cover your windows in an attractive and functional way is always a major question for homeowners. Window treatments are more than just decorative items — they also block or let in the sunshine, and give privacy when needed. They must look good, and serve a practical purpose.

So begin thinking about what is most important to you.

Is privacy at the top of the list? That alone will determine the type of window covering you choose. Is it important to black out all light in the room? That adds another dimension to your decision. What direction does the window face? Will strong sun at certain times of the day be an issue? If so, you might need something light to cut the glare of the sun, yet let the light continue to come in.

The architectural elements of the window are also important. If the window is rich with attractive architectural elements, it would be a shame to cover that beauty. In that case, no window treatment might be a choice, or a treatment that only covers the glass.

Is the view attractive — or annoying? Here again, to cover or not to cover is the question.

Once you’ve addressed the specifics and the needs of each window, it is time to decorate. The style of the room helps dictate the style of the window treatments.

Sometimes the architecture of the house will be the driving force; other times it will be the furnishings in the room. Is the room contemporary, or is it eclectic? Country or traditional? Is there a little retro going on in there? The window coverings must follow the room’s trend.

Next comes choosing the color and pattern. If a fabric treatment is the way you intend to go, one option is coordinating the window fabric with the fabrics in the furniture, perhaps duplicating the toss-pillow fabrics or copying the fabric on the occasional chairs. The more custom fabric you choose, the more of a designer look you create. If, on the other hand, there are already several patterns in the room on the walls and on the upholstery, a solid-color fabric is probably more appropriate for the windows.

Once you’ve addressed the functional needs and the decorative finish, you will certainly have coverings for your windows that you can enjoy visually and practically.
