Trio accused of taking items from high school

Three students have been accused of burglarizing several classrooms and offices at St. Charles East High School in April, snagging nearly $200 in cash and other items such as calculators, flash drives, keys and laser pointers.

Two of the defendants are 16-year-old males from St. Charles, police announced Thursday.

A third, Shane R. Carroll, 18, of the 3000 block of Raphael Court, St. Charles, has been charged with felony burglary and has a June 6 status hearing, according to court records.

St. Charles Police spokesman Paul McCurtain said the trio is accused of going into several rooms at the high school April 21.

The three were among a club group of about 20 students and a staff adviser who were meeting at the school that Saturday.

McCurtain said the trio began wandering around the school, checking to see which doors were open, and entering various offices and classrooms and taking miscellaneous property.

“That’s what they did (checking doors) with a lot of them. Then they found a set of keys in one room,” he said.

McCurtain said the school resource officer and high school staff members investigated and were able to recover the stolen items and identify the students who were responsible.

Carroll is free on $2,500 bond while his case is pending.

The burglary charge carries a top sentence of seven years in prison if convicted, but probation also is an option.

Jim Blaney, St. Charles School District 303 spokesman, said he could not comment on whether the district had taken disciplinary action against the trio because it was a confidential student matter.
