Lawyer: No proof Blagojevich knew of pay-to-play

Rod Blagojevich’s attorney says no evidence has been presented in court supporting claims the imprisoned ex-governor knew contributors donated money to his campaign to secure state appointments.

Sheldon Sorosky responded Thursday to comments longtime Blagojevich friend and fundraiser Tony Rezko made in interviews from prison with the Chicago Sun-Times and WLS TV on Wednesday.

Sorosky questioned whether it’s even illegal to appoint a contributor to a position. He says if there’s no link between a donation and getting the position, there’s probably no crime.

Blagojevich is serving a 14-year prison sentence in Colorado on multiple corruption counts. Rezko is in prison in Illinois for fraud and other convictions.

Asked if Blagojevich still considers Rezko a friend, Sorosky paused and said: “The governor certainly hopes Rezko is a friend.”
