Indiana teen stuck in Mexico may still address classmates
FRANKFORT, Ind. — A star student at a central Indiana high school who’s stuck in Mexico due to an immigration technicality could still be part of her graduation ceremony.
Community Schools of Frankfort interim superintendent Don DeWeese says officials are trying to arrange an online video link so 18-year-old Elizabeth Olivas can deliver Frankfort High School’s salutatorian speech.
DeWeese says school officials want “her to be a part of that ceremony as much as possible” if she can’t return to the U.S. for Saturday’s commencement.
Olivas has lived in Indiana since age 4. But The Indianapolis Star reports immigration law required her to travel to her native Mexico within six months of her 18th birthday to get a visa, or green card. She was one day late.
