Man accused of torching black family’s home in racially motivated crime

A Joliet man has been arrested on charges he set fire to the home of a black family living on his street in 2007.

Brian James Moudry is scheduled to appear Thursday in U.S. District Court in Chicago. The 35-year-old Moudry is charged with one count each of arson, using fire to interfere with housing rights on the basis of race, and using fire to commit another felony. The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury last Thursday and unsealed Wednesday.

Eight children and one adult were living in the home when a fire broke out in the early-morning hours of June 17, 2007. They were able to escape the blaze. They moved from the neighborhood after the fire.

It wasn’t immediately known if Moudry has obtained legal counsel.
