Big 7-run third boosts Cougars
Thanks to a 7-run explosion in the third inning, the Kane County Cougars cruised to a 7-3 victory over the Burlington Bees on Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva, completing a three-game sweep.
The Bees (20-27) had notched a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second against Brooks Pounders (3-1). Douglas Landaeta led off me with a double and scored on a throwing error by Pounders, which put Bobby Crocker at third base. A groundout to first by Royce Consigli allowed Crocker to come home.
Seth Frankoff (0-3) opened the door for the Cougars (26-22) by walking Runey Davis and Justin Trapp to start the third. Both runners scored on Danny Mateo’s triple down the right-field line. Mateo scored on a hit by Jorge Bonifacio.
After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Orlando Calixte delivered a 2-run single to put the Cougars up by 3. Chas Mye entered in relief and walked Davis with the bases full before Justin Trapp singled home a run to cap the rally.
Pounders lasted 6 innings with 6 strikeouts. Mike Giovenco and Nick Graffeo combined to work the final 3 innings to preserve the lead.
