Police say one driver remains in serious condition Friday morning
Illinois State Police said Friday two drivers in Thursday afternoon’s crash on Interstate 88 near Kaneville have received citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the drivers cited nor the names of the injured drivers.
State police said they continue to investigate the crash that left one person seriously injured.
Officials said three semitrailers were slowing with traffic in the eastbound lanes of I-88 near Dauberman Road, but due to a near-zero visibility dust storm a van did not slow and struck the back of one of the semis. That semi hit a second semi which in turn struck a third semitrailer just before 4 p.m.
A medical helicopter was called to the scene, and police eventually shut down all lanes of traffic from Route 56 in Sugar Grove west to Peace Road in DeKalb.
The driver of the van was flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, and Friday remained in serious condition, Illinois State Police Trooper Michelle Kistulinec said.
The drivers of two of the semitrailers were injured and taken to an area hospital by ambulance, police said. Their conditions were unknown Friday morning.
A wind advisory was in effect for much of the afternoon, and the National Weather Service reported a dust storm with near-zero visibility near the scene of the crash.
Firefighters and paramedics from the Kaneville and the Elburn and Countryside fire protection districts responded to the crash.
